Body Hair Removal For Men - A History Of Shaving

Here is a personal and historical over view of shaving as the most commonly used method of body hair removal for men -

"O my goodness!", Mary said, as she walked into her husband's bookshop in Sydney,Australia. "Bill, What have you done to your face?" she asks.

When Mary left home earlier to go shopping, Bill had a big red bushy beard. Now he was clean shaven.

Mary's father had a bushy beard, so had her Grandfather. She had grown up around men with bushy beards and that was one of the reasons she married Bill. Now his bushy beard was gone.

Bill replied, "It is because of our thirteen year old daughter, Sally. Sally had always wondered what I looked like without a beard, so I cut it down with my hair trimmer and then shaved it off with my electric shaver. Don't be alarmed Mary, I will regrow it once Sally sees it."

I happened to walk into the bookshop, as Bill and Mary were talking about him shaving his beard off. It made me reflect on the history of body hair removal for men, particularly shaving, and the currently modern shaving habits of men.

Here is what I found:

The history of shaving goes back to the stone ages, prehistoric times, when men pulled hair from their bodies. From there men's body hair removal evolved. In 1500-1200 B.C., in ancient Scandinavia, razors were produced. In ancient Greece, 500 B.C., men cropped their hair short and shaved their faces.

Shaving continues throughout the ages right through to United States, where Lt. Colonel Jacob Schick, who in 1921 was so inspired by the Army's repeating rifle, creates a new razor - The, "Magazine Repeating Razor". This has replacement razors stored inside its handle. In 1926, Colonel Schick begins marketing his razors to the public in America.

In 1927, it happened Schick has a brainwave. He invents the very first electric dry shaver that has oscillating blades.

This was a huge breakthrough for men shaving.

In 1928, to obtain much needed capital to finance the production of his new invention, the electric dry shaver, Schick sells the assets of his, "Magazine Repeating Razors", to the American Chain and Cable Company. Finally, in 1929, the electric shaver is available for purchase by the general public.

The thing was, men were used to removing their body hair with a wet razor and were not crazy about buying this new device.

Between 1929 and 1948, a mechanical/electrical engineer, by the name of Alexandre Horowitz, goes to work for the Phillips Company, located in Eindhoven, Holland. Whilst working there, he develops numerous products, including the first double headed shaver.

From the 1930s onwards, there were new companies creating wet razors, which were in direct competition with the electric shaver. In the 1960s, disposable razors, (throwaways after use), were created.

The electric shaver, (also known as the electric dry shaver), is a common electrical shaving device which has a rotating or oscillating blade. The electric shaver, unlike a razor, does not require the use of shaving cream, soap, or water. The electric shaver is powered by a small DC motor and usually has rechargeable batteries, though the early types were directly powered from the electric mains.

Electric shavers have a shaving head consisting of blades that cut off the hair entering the head of the shaver at skin level.

Shaver manufacturers are all trying to improve the body hair removal experience for men.

Men are also looking for longer life from their personal grooming products. This is a huge unique selling point with regards to body hair removal products for men.

Versatility is also appealing. And today there's an electric shaver that offers men the chance to shave, trim and style any part of their body.

But the bottom line is, research reveals that men's number one need from any hair removal product is closeness. And the newest of these shavers focuses on delivering enhanced hair removal on one or every part of his body.

It seems full body hair removal for men is the hot new trend and most definitely the way of the future for modern men.
